Seonamsa Temple at Mt. Jogye-san is
located at Jukhak-ri, Seungju-eup,
Suncheonsi. In the 7th year of the reign by
King Seong of the Baekje dynasty (A.D. 529),
Buddhist Monk Adohwasang built a
hermitage on the eastern slope of Jogye-san
(at that time called Songgwang-san) and
named it Biro-am. In the first year of the rule
by King Gyeongmun of Silla (A.D.861),
National Master Doseon-guksa constructed a
grand temple here called Seonamsa. As the
head temple out of the Samamsa (Unamsa,
Yongamsa and Seonamsa), it gave a
tremendous boost to Zen Buddhism. This
temple has 19 cultural properties including 11
Local Cultural Properties.
The portrait of Doseon-guksa painted in the 18th Century, kept at Jogye-san Seonam-sa.
