Andong City's Holy Mountians Cheondeung-san 574m and Hakka-san 870m (with Joun-san 630m)
|
This complex of three mountains is the most sacred area of Andong City in the center of North
Gyeongsang Province (Gyeongsang-bukdo), defending it from the northwest. It is a significant
center of important Buddhist temples and Shamanic activities. Cheondeung-san hosts the
ancient monastery Bongjeong-sa and several related hermitages on its south, and the famous
Icheon-dong Jebiwon Buddha-carving on its southeastern foothills. Hak-ga-san is a favorite of
hikers as it is the tallest peak of the Andong region; it hosts Aeyeon-am and other hermitages
and (on its western slope, in Yecheon County) Bomun-sa Temple where Jinul Bojo-guksa had
his first enlightenment experience.

The famous Icheon-dong Jebiwon-bul Buddha-carving has stood guard over the
northern entraceway to Andong City for nearly 1000 years, in the southeastern
foothills of Cheondeung-san. It's a relief-carving of the body on a sheer boulder-side,
under a 3D-carved head made from a natural stone found on top of that cliff. It is now
cared-for by a small temple tucked below and behind it, named Jebiwon-Yeonmi-sa.
